Painting With Light This shot was taken as a 30 second exposure at f11 and an ISO of 1000. Photography literally means “painting with light” and there have been some pretty amazing artists that have played with a variety of techniques to accentuate the painting side of photography. There is some kind of obligatory necessity to spend at least some time trying to spell words or make shapes with a light source when you start playing with long exposures… but it can be a tremendous catalyst for creative explorations and experiments in shaping how subjects are revealed. I hope to create some time to really play with this approach to images.  In this shot I attempted to create an illusion that the moon shining in the distance was actually illuminating the spot where I was standing (NOTE the shadow being cast suggesting a light source from behind). Painting the background and foreground with light and then carving a circle of light out of the darkness- zen style. Inside a circle of light is a great place to BE.
